Gishora Drum Sanctuary, Sacred drum sanctuary in Gishora, Burundi
Gishora Drum Sanctuary is a sacred site of veneration located on a hilltop near Gitega in Burundi. Traditional thatched-roof huts and banana plantations surround the complex, with the center dedicated to preserving and performing ritual drums.
King Mwezi Gisabo established the sanctuary in 1900 as a refuge during resistance against German colonial rule. This founding made it a powerful symbol of Burundian independence and national resilience.
The sanctuary preserves an ancient tradition of royal drum performances recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Visitors can experience this living practice today when musicians perform their art in this sacred space.
The site is reached via a winding path from the main road between Gitega and Ngozi, requiring a moderate walk uphill. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and allow time to explore the grounds and watch performances if scheduled.
Drum performances here follow a strict gender-based tradition where only men play the sacred instruments. Women participate through dance and song, contributing to the rituals in their own way.
