The Castle Nalut

The fortress contains 400 rooms spread across multiple levels, constructed from local stone and featuring traditional mud-brick architecture of the region.

During the tenth century, inhabitants of the Nafusa Mountains built this defensive structure to protect grain storage and maintain control over trade routes.

The castle demonstrates Berber architectural methods with its organized storage chambers, traditional granaries, and fortified walls adapted to the mountain environment.

Located 789 meters above sea level in northwestern Libya, the castle provides an opportunity to explore ancient defensive systems and grain storage methods.

The castle includes specialized chambers called ghorfas, vertically stacked storage units that kept provisions cool during hot desert temperatures.
