Bateshwar
Bateshwar is a small village near the Yamuna River southeast of Agra, known for its Shiva temple and ancient ruins scattered throughout the settlement. The structures show different construction phases with brickwork and stonework from various historical periods mixed together across the site.
The area has been inhabited since around 3000 BC and was called Shauryapura in ancient Jain texts, named after King Shursen. Over centuries it experienced various rulers from the Maurya Empire to the Kushan period, and many unfinished temples were built later during turmoil following the fall of Mughal rule.
The name comes from a legend about a spiritual practitioner who built a shrine under a large Banyan tree to honor Shiva. Pilgrims and locals still visit the temples here for worship and gather during festivals, keeping these spiritual traditions alive in daily village life.
The village is about 12 kilometers from Bah and 70 kilometers from Agra, reachable by local transport like motorcycle, car, or buses. Visitors can walk through the ruins to explore the temples, and it is best to arrive during earlier hours of the day when it is cooler.
The original settlement sites were located elsewhere before the Yamuna River shifted its course and the current village formed. Archaeologists have found bricks and stones from earlier periods that were reused by later builders, showing how history layered itself at this location.
