Darwaza-i-Rauza

Darwaza-i-Rauza is the main entrance gate to the Taj Mahal complex, built from brick with elegant arches and intricate marble inlays. This structure marks the transition from the outer area into the gardens and the famous mausoleum beyond.

The gate was constructed during the Mughal period in the 17th century as part of the original Taj Mahal complex. It represents the architectural skill and craftsmanship characteristic of that era.

The gateway displays intricate calligraphy and geometric patterns in its vaulted ceilings, reflecting artistic traditions of Islamic architecture. These decorations show how craftsmakers integrated their skills into every corner of the structure.

The gate is open daily from sunrise to sunset for visitors entering the Taj Mahal complex. Security checks occur here, so plan for a brief wait before passing through.

As you approach through the gate, the Taj Mahal appears larger, and as you move away it seems smaller - an optical effect created by the gate's shape and position. This perspective trick was deliberately planned by the builders.
