Musamman Burj, Octagonal tower in Agra Fort, India.

Musamman Burj is an octagonal tower made of marble with intricate stone inlays and carved lattice work that overlooks the Yamuna River. The structure sits within the fort complex and rises above the surrounding areas to provide elevated views.

Construction of the tower took place between 1631 and 1640 under Shah Jahan, replacing an earlier marble palace from Emperor Akbar's era. The new structure reflected the ruler's redesign of the fort according to his own vision.

The screened windows were designed to let royal family members watch the fort's activity below while staying out of public view. This reflected the privacy practices expected at the royal court.

Access to the tower is through the fort's main entrance, with upper levels reached by climbing stone stairs inside. Wear comfortable shoes for the stairs and allow time to explore each level carefully.

Shah Jahan spent his final eight years imprisoned in this tower, where he could see the Taj Mahal through the marble screens. This poignant chapter of his life remains a touching detail that many visitors find memorable.
