Balekambang is a beach on the southern coast of Kabupaten Malang, in East Java, Indonesia. Three rocky islets rise from the water just in front of the shore, and one of them is connected to the sand by a concrete footbridge.
The beach has long been visited by people from the surrounding region, but it gained wider recognition after a footbridge was built to connect the mainland to Ismoyo Island. This link to the temple on the islet established the site as a place with both religious and recreational importance.
A small Hindu temple sits on one of the rocky islets just offshore, reached by a concrete footbridge from the sand. On certain religious occasions, worshippers gather there for ceremonies tied to the sea, giving the beach a role beyond simple recreation.
Going early in the morning gives the best light for the bridge and the islets, and the beach tends to be less crowded at that time. Comfortable walking shoes help, since exploring the shore and crossing the footbridge involves a fair amount of walking on uneven surfaces.
The site is sometimes called 'the Tanah Lot of East Java' because the image of a temple perched on a rock surrounded by water closely resembles the famous Balinese site. Visitors who know Tanah Lot often notice the resemblance the moment they step onto the footbridge.
