Pantai Sendangbir, Beach in Malang, Indonesia

Pantai Sendangbir is a beach on the East Java coast featuring white sand and a clear view toward Sempu Island across the water. It serves as a working fishing port with an auction hall where the morning catch is traded.

Pantai Sendangbiru opened as a fishing beach in 1970, initially used only by local fishermen. In the 1980s, fishermen from outside the area arrived after the Pondokdadap fish landing port was built between 1980 and 1989. The beach lies in protected forest plots 81 and 86, managed by Perum Perhutani through KBM JLPL Unit II.

The name Sendangbiru comes from a blue-water spring (sendang) at the foot of a hill about 1 km west of the beach, one of two springs, alongside Sendanggambir, that supply Sitiarjo and nearby villages. Around 7–8 Syawal, after Lebaran, people take boats to Sempu Island to collect water from a freshwater spring believed to bring health and recovery. Every 27 September residents hold the petik laut sea offering.

You can buy seafood directly at the morning auction from fishermen at much lower prices than markets, and have it grilled at stalls nearby. Visiting early in the morning gives you the most activity and best selection.

The name Sendangbiru comes from a spring (sendang) at the foot of a hill about 1 km west of the beach, a pool roughly 10 by 8 metres and 2.5 metres deep whose water is blue. A second spring, Sendanggambir, lies nearby, but Sendangbiru has the larger flow, and residents of Sitiarjo and the surrounding area depend on both.
