Malang Plain

The Malang Plain contains nine ash cones, maars, and volcanic plugs scattered across elevated terrain at 680 meters above sea level. These geological structures result from past volcanic activity and shape the distinctive landscape visible today.

Multiple volcanic eruptions during the Holocene period shaped this region and created the distinctive geological formations seen today. These repeated activity events left behind a complex arrangement of different rock formations.

Local farmers use the fertile volcanic soil to grow crops that feed communities across the Malang region. This agricultural practice has shaped daily life and the economy of surrounding villages for generations.

The formations are accessible through guided tours from Malang city, with observation points offering views across the area. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, as the terrain is uneven and sun exposure can be significant.
