Taman Safari Indonesia, Safari wildlife park in Prigen, Indonesia
Taman Safari Indonesia is a safari wildlife park in Prigen spreading across 170 hectares of land, housing more than 3,000 animals including Bengal tigers, Malayan sun bears, giraffes, orangutans, hippos, and zebras. The facility combines drive-through sections with walking zones where visitors experience certain species up close.
The park began in 1980 on unused plantation land and received official recognition as a National Tourism Object from the Indonesian Minister of Tourism in 1990. Expansions over the decades brought new habitats and animal species from around the world.
Nine different animal presentations take place daily, including traditional performances at the Safari Theater and a Wild West cowboy show reflecting international influences. The shows blend local entertainment traditions with animal education and draw families from across Java.
Visitors can explore the grounds via personal vehicles or join guided bus tours from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with options for daytime safari and night safari experiences. The best time for animal watching is early morning when many species are more active.
The Panda Palace houses two giant pandas, Cai Tao and Hu Chun, who traveled over 4,400 kilometers (2,735 miles) from Chengdu, China to their new Indonesian home. The pair serve as ambassadors of Chinese-Indonesian cooperation and live in a climate-controlled facility with an artificial bamboo forest.
