La Maison du Paréo

La Maison du Paréo is a fabric art workshop in Huahine where fabrics are hand-painted and fashioned into pareos. The workspace spans multiple areas: two buildings along the waterfront handle retail and customization, while a separate workshop space on a nearby motu hosts larger production work.

The workshop was established to preserve and pass on traditional Polynesian fabric painting methods. This craft tradition has been maintained through family involvement and local artisans across successive generations.

Local artisans demonstrate how pareos are traditionally made by hand, teaching visitors about the fabric painting techniques that have been central to Polynesian craft for generations. The workshop keeps these methods alive as a living practice rather than a historical relic.

The site is located right along the waterfront, making it easy to find and explore the different work areas. It is best to arrive earlier in the day when more artisans are present and activities are in full swing.

Visitors can participate in hands-on workshops to design and paint their own pareos under direct instruction from local artisans. This practical learning takes place right by the ocean, adding a special quality to the experience.
