Mount Tohivea

Mount Tohivea is a volcanic summit rising to approximately 1,200 meters above Moorea island. Its steep slopes are densely covered with tropical vegetation and native plant species that thrive in the ocean climate.

The mountain formed during a volcanic building phase roughly 1.5 to 2 million years ago. This volcanic process gradually shaped the central landscape of Moorea over a long period of time.

The mountain holds a place in local identity and was featured on Polynesian currency designs. Its silhouette is a familiar landmark that residents see from many parts of the island.

The best time to hike is in the early morning hours when visibility is better and weather remains more stable. Good footwear and plenty of water are essential since the climb is steep and the terrain is often wet.

After heavy rainfall, temporary waterfalls emerge on the upper slopes and become visible from across the island. These short-lived cascades appear during wet seasons and create a dramatic natural spectacle that many visitors try to time their trip to experience.
