Unfinished well, Tourist attraction in Sintra, Portugal
The Unfinished Well is an underground structure on the grounds of Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra, Portugal. It consists of a straight staircase connecting a series of circular floors and was never used as a water source.
The Unfinished Well was built between 1904 and 1910 on the orders of António Carvalho Monteiro, a wealthy collector with an interest in mysticism and secret societies. The estate it belongs to was bought by the municipality of Sintra in 1997 and later opened to the public.
The Unfinished Well is seen as a counterpart to the better-known Initiation Well on the same estate. Visitors who look closely at its walls and floor can spot carved symbols connected to alchemical and mystical traditions.
The Unfinished Well is located within the grounds of Quinta da Regaleira and is reached by walking along the estate's garden paths. The grounds are large, so comfortable shoes and enough time to explore are a good idea.
Unlike the Initiation Well on the same estate, which has nine landings, the Unfinished Well was left intentionally incomplete, not due to a lack of resources. It connects to the estate's underground tunnel network, which links different structures and lets visitors surface in unexpected spots.
