Regaleira Tower, Tower in Sintra, Portugal
The Regaleira Tower is a small, freestanding stone tower built in the Neo-Manueline style, standing within the grounds of Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra, Portugal. A narrow spiral staircase leads up to a small circular platform at the top, from which visitors can look out over the treetops and buildings of the estate.
The entire Quinta da Regaleira estate, including the tower, was commissioned at the start of the 20th century by the Brazilian millionaire António Augusto de Carvalho Monteiro. The tower was built as part of a carefully planned ensemble, where every element, including wells, grottos, paths, and towers, was placed with a clear purpose.
The tower is part of the Quinta da Regaleira estate, which António Augusto de Carvalho Monteiro shaped according to his own ideas at the start of the 20th century. The stone carvings on the tower, with curved arches and floral motifs, follow the Neo-Manueline style that was seen in Portugal at the time as a mark of national identity.
The staircase to the top of the tower is narrow and steep, making it hard to access for people with limited mobility. Visiting in the early morning is a good idea, as the light is softer and there are fewer people around.
The tower is precisely aligned with other elements across the estate, so that from its top, specific sightlines open toward grottos and terraces. This placement was not accidental but part of the overall design of the grounds.
