Observatório Oficial Dark Sky Alqueva
The Observatório Oficial Dark Sky Alqueva is an astronomical observatory in Campo e Campinho, located on a hilltop about 7 kilometers from Reguengos de Monsaraz. The facility houses advanced telescopes for viewing planets, lunar craters, and distant galaxies, along with a permanent photo exhibition and a small museum displaying real meteorites.
The building was originally a primary school before being completely renovated and converted into the observatory and headquarters of Dark Sky Alqueva. This transformation created an important center for astronomy and dark sky protection in the region.
The observatory is named Dark Sky Alqueva, reflecting the region's commitment to protecting dark skies for stargazing. Visitors learn how the local community works together to reduce light pollution and preserve the natural night environment for everyone.
The site is easily accessible from Reguengos de Monsaraz and offers clear nights with minimal light pollution, making it ideal for stargazing. Visitors should register before arrival and plan visits during clear, dry nights for the best views of the sky.
The observatory features a permanent photo exhibition by renowned astrophotographer Miguel Claro and a signed photo from the last astronaut to visit the moon. These rare items connect the history of space exploration directly to today's stargazing experiences.
