Mercado Beira-Rio, Market in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal
Mercado Beira-Rio is a market in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. It has over 1000 square meters and 47 commercial spaces, including stalls selling fresh produce, restaurants, wine bars, and craft beer spots, with seating inside and outside.
The market began in 1868 as an open-air market near the Cais da Vila, and in 1896 it was fenced with iron railings and became known as Mercado da Praia. The current building was constructed in 1904, and after a period of decline, it reopened in 2017 with a renovated concept.
Locals and visitors mix here to share plates and try different flavors, a habit encouraged by the market's focus on combining traditional fresh products with modern food. The name Beira-Rio refers to its position by the river, and the space often hosts live music, art shows, and seasonal events.
The market sits on the riverfront of Vila Nova de Gaia, a short walk from the Dom Luís I Bridge and the Porto side. It is open year-round with long hours, so you can visit for lunch, dinner, or a snack, and the layout makes it easy to wander between stalls.
The 2017 renovation preserved the original structure while adding modern touches, and it created nearly 100 jobs. The market also has a dedicated space for Super Bock beer experiences, a nod to local brewing culture.
