Choo Choo Barn is a model train display in Strasburg Township, Pennsylvania, covering around 1,700 square feet (158 sq m) and showing scenes of Lancaster County and American life. More than 22 operating trains and 150 animated figures fill the layout, which was built by one family over several decades.
George Groff started the first layout in a family basement in 1945, using a Lionel train set as the starting point. The family opened it to the public in 1961, and successive generations have continued to expand and refine it ever since.
The display recreates scenes from Lancaster County life, including an Amish barn raising and a miniature version of the Strasburg Rail Road. Visitors often recognize local landmarks they may have just seen outside, which gives the whole experience a personal feel.
The barn sits on Route 741 just east of Strasburg, close to several other local attractions, making it easy to combine with a broader day out. A visit typically lasts around an hour, though those who take time to look at the scenes in detail often stay longer.
One of the most talked-about scenes features a house fire where real water actually shoots from a tiny fire hose. Separately, the display includes a miniature tribute to every US president, arranged around a moving flag.
