Sea Lion Caves

Sea Lion Caves is the largest sea cave in the United States, located on Oregon's coast about 11 miles (18 km) north of Florence. The cave system formed over 25 million years ago through volcanic activity and wave erosion, featuring a main chamber roughly 1,315 feet (400 m) long with ceilings reaching about 125 feet (38 m) high.

The caves were discovered in 1880 by Captain William Cox, who purchased the land in 1887 and opened them to the public in 1932 with constructed pathways and stairs. An elevator installed in 1961 significantly improved access for visitors and was replaced in 2016 to maintain safe conditions.

The caves serve as a natural home for Steller sea lions that live here year-round, resting and raising their young in this protected space. The animals freely come and go, with their numbers changing seasonally as they move between the cave and nearby coastal areas.

The site is open year-round and located about 11 miles north of Florence along Highway 101, making it easy to reach by car. An elevator descends over 200 feet into the cave where pathways allow close viewing of the animals, though visitors should wear comfortable shoes and bring warm clothing since the cave environment is cool.

An elevator is required to reach the cave descending over 200 feet, a solution implemented in 1961 that revolutionized access and has since allowed countless visitors to experience this natural wonder. The sounds of sea lions echoing inside the cave create a unique sensory experience that lingers in visitors' memories long after they leave.
