Tobago Cays Marine Park, Marine park in Southern Grenadines, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Tobago Cays Marine Park consists of five uninhabited islands forming a protected marine area surrounded by coral reefs and white sand beaches. The turquoise waters span approximately 1,400 acres (570 hectares) of shallow lagoon where fish, turtles, and other sea life thrive.
The islands shifted from private ownership to government control in 1999, when the park was officially established as a protected marine area. This change marked the beginning of conservation efforts and sustainable tourism practices.
Local fishermen work in specific areas using methods passed down through generations, and travelers can learn directly from them about marine life. This living tradition shows how communities depend on and respect these waters.
The park is accessible only by boat, with water taxis and guided tours departing daily from Clifton Harbor on Union Island. Visitors should prepare for boat conditions and bring sun protection plus snorkeling gear.
Green sea turtles inhabit the designated protection zones and can be observed by visitors swimming freely in their natural seagrass habitat. Many travelers consider close encounters with these creatures a highlight of their visit.
