Petite Nevis, Private island in Grenadines Parish, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Petite Nevis is a 29-acre private Caribbean island in the Grenadines with a highest elevation of about 61 meters (200 feet). The shoreline features palm-lined sandy beaches and several small coves suitable for swimming and water activities.
The island served as a processing facility for whale catches in the 20th century, supporting traditional practices of nearby island communities. Whaling activities declined and eventually ceased in the early 2000s with the end of local whaling traditions.
Local whale boat captain Athneal Ollivierre, a former part-owner of the island, maintained whaling traditions until his death in 2000.
The west-facing bay provides protected anchorage for boats, with multiple beaches offering different ways to access the water. Keep in mind that this is a private island and visiting requires prior permission from the owner.
The residents of nearby Bequia's Moonhole community gather whale bones from this island and incorporate them into their building structures. This unusual connection between the islands shows how traditional practices have shaped the region's material culture.
