Jardin de Balata, Botanical garden in Fort-de-France, Martinique, France.
The Jardin de Balata is a botanical garden in Martinique, France, set on a hillside above Fort-de-France on land that was once used for farming. An elevated wooden walkway threads through dense tropical growth, with palms, heliconias, and bromeliads lining the path on all sides.
The garden was founded in 1982 by Jean-Philippe Thoze on former farmland and opened to the public in 1986. In just a few years, the site went from working agricultural land to one of the most visited botanical collections in the Caribbean.
A traditional Creole house stands within the grounds, showing how people built and lived on the island in earlier times. It sits among the greenery and is easy to miss, but it offers a genuine window into everyday local life from the past.
The elevated wooden walkway allows visitors to move through the dense growth safely, even shortly after rain. Sturdy footwear is still a good idea since some sections of the path can be slippery in wet conditions.
Many of the plants growing here come from regions far outside the Caribbean, yet they thrive just as well in this tropical hillside setting. Most visitors walk past without realising that the collection spans several continents at once.
