Ginzanso is a hotel in the Ginzan Onsen hot spring district of Obanazawa, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. The building is wooden, with traditional Japanese interiors including tatami rooms and access to natural hot spring baths.
The Ginzan Onsen area where the hotel stands was once an active silver mining site in the 16th century, which gave the hot spring district its name. After the mines closed, the area gradually became a spa town, and many of its wooden buildings date from the Taisho era (1912-1926).
The hotel is reachable by car, with parking available nearby, and winter tires are strongly recommended as roads can be icy in the colder months. The nearest train station is Oishida, from which a bus connection runs to the Ginzan Onsen area.
The name 'Ginzan' means 'silver mountain' in Japanese, a direct reference to the mining past of the area that most visitors walking the streets today are unaware of. What now looks like a classic spa town was once a working miners' settlement.
