Statue of Jesus Christ, Religious statue on Mount Hatis, Armenia
The white Statue of Jesus Christ rises above Mount Hatis in Kotayk Province, dominating the landscape as a large religious symbol at approximately 2500 meters elevation. The structure is made of white material and remains visible from much of the surrounding area.
The project to build the statue began in 2022 following a competition where designs were evaluated through public voting and jury selection. Sculptor Armen Samvelyan won the competition with his design.
The statue stands in Armenia, the first nation to make Christianity its state religion, and represents the continuing role of Christian faith in the region's identity. It serves as a visible expression of this heritage that visitors encounter during their mountain journey.
Visitors reach the statue by following mountain paths that begin from Kotayk Province, with spring and autumn offering the best conditions for the ascent. Winter and summer can present more difficult or less comfortable conditions.
The statue was selected through a public voting process via SMS, making it a project with direct citizen participation. This unusual selection method shows how the local community was involved in the decision.
