The region, first mentioned by Ptolemy as Kotakene, emerged from the historic Kotayk canton within the ancient Ayrarat province of Armenia.

The Temple of Garni, a pre-Christian structure, and the medieval Geghard Monastery display the architectural traditions of different periods in Armenian history.

Transportation networks connect seven urban municipalities and sixty rural communities, facilitating trade between local agricultural producers and markets throughout Armenia.

Kotayk stands as the sole Armenian province without international borders, sharing boundaries exclusively with other Armenian provinces and the capital city Yerevan.
