Mount Ara, Stratovolcanic mountain in Kotayk Province, Armenia
Mount Ara is a stratovolcano in Armenia's Kotayk Province with an elevation of 2577 meters and a destroyed crater measuring 9 kilometers in diameter. Its slopes support forested areas and local plant species.
The mountain formed approximately 1.3 million years ago through volcanic activity, confirmed by dating the andesite and dacite rocks. This ancient geological history shaped the landscape we see today.
The ruins of Gharghavank Church on the slopes serve as a gathering place where local people sell mountain sorrel during Easter celebrations. This custom connects the mountain to the region's spiritual traditions.
Multiple hiking trails cross the forested sections on the northern and eastern slopes, with conditions varying by season. Spring offers the best trekking conditions and the safest path access.
The mountain hosts an endemic plant species called Conizonia found nowhere else, making its ecosystem scientifically important. Eagles and the Caucasian Black Grouse also live here, adding to the area's biological wealth.
