Neghuts Monastery

Neghuts Monastery is a monastery complex in Arzakan built from gray basalt stone with a central domed church and two smaller chapels at its northeastern and southeastern corners. The stone construction appears sturdy and tightly fitted, showing the skill of its medieval builders.

The main church was built in 1213, with its entrance hall added in 1221 under architect Aghbayrik vardapet's direction. These construction phases shaped the complex as it exists today.

The stone inscriptions carved into the walls show how people recorded their prayers and memories in this place. These engravings reveal details about daily religious life and beliefs in medieval Armenian communities.

The monastery sits on a hilltop northwest of Arzakan village and is reached by following a marked path from the main road. The walk is manageable on foot, and the elevated location offers views across the surrounding landscape.

The gray basalt stones used to build the monastery come from local sources and display construction techniques that were specialized to medieval Armenian craftsmen. This particular stone gives the building its distinctive weight and appearance.
