Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral, Cathedral in Kentron District, Yerevan, Armenia.

Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral is a complex of three churches in Yerevan's Kentron District, next to the General Andranik metro station. The main church, with 1,700 seats, rises 54 metres to the top of its cross; the chapels of Saint Tiridates the King and Saint Ashkhen the Queen each seat 150. A belfry of more than 30 arches and a court stand at the entrance, and the whole complex covers about 3,822 square metres.

Construction began on 7 April 1997 with a ground blessing by Catholicos Karekin I, on the initiative of Catholicos Vazgen I, and the complex designed by architect Stepan Kurkchyan was finished in 2001. The consecration fell on 23 September 2001, the 1700th anniversary of Christianity's proclamation as Armenia's state religion. Relics of Saint Gregory the Illuminator were brought from Naples, and Pope John Paul II visited soon after.

The two side chapels are named for King Tiridates III and Queen Ashkhen, the royal helpers of Saint Gregory in the conversion of Armenia. The cathedral keeps relics of Saint Gregory brought from Naples, and Pope John Paul II visited shortly after the 2001 consecration. Candles may be lit only in a separate building on the southeast side.

The cathedral stands in the Kentron District beside the General Andranik metro station, so it is easily reached by metro or on foot from the centre. Candles may not be lit inside the main church; a separate building on the southeast side is set aside for them. The complex has three churches, so allow time to walk through the belfry court and the chapels.

The cathedral was one of the first churches in Armenia to install seats, and candles may only be lit in a separate building on the southeast side. The belfry at the entrance is made of more than 30 arches, funded by Eduardo Eurnekian. The main church was donated by Richard Alexander Manoogian and Louise Manoogian Simone in memory of Alex and Marie Manoogian.
