Batthyány-Familiengruft, Family burial vault at Franciscan monastery, Güssing, Austria

The Batthyány family burial vault sits beneath the Franciscan church in Güssing and stretches in a cross shape under the building. The entrance displays classicist features with angel sculptures and religious figures, while the interior holds more than 100 sarcophagi and urns.

The vault was founded by Count Adam Batthyány in the mid-17th century and has served as the family's burial place since then. The site expanded over generations and continues to mark the monastery's importance in the region.

The vault was created for the Batthyány family, one of the region's most important noble families, and shows how important they were locally. When you visit, you see tombs of high-ranking military figures and nobles that tell the family's story.

A visit requires advance registration at the Franciscan monastery, best arranged by contacting the parish office at Franziskanerplatz. Guided tours are available and help you understand the layout and history fully.

Though it ranks as Austria's second-largest family vault after Vienna's Imperial Crypt, it holds the highest number of burials in the entire country. This makes it an remarkable repository of the Batthyány family's memory and connections.
