Klosterkirche – Franziskanerkloster – Familiengruft der Batthyány

Klosterkirche – Franziskanerkloster – Familiengruft der Batthyány, Franciscan monastery church in Güssing, Austria.

The Klosterkirche is a monastery church in Güssing featuring tall stone walls, rounded-arch windows, and a distinctive tower. The complex includes connected cloister spaces and residential buildings that form the complete monastic settlement.

The building began as an Augustinian monastery in the 12th century before transitioning to Franciscan ownership. Religious upheaval during the Reformation and Counter-Reformation periods reshaped its role and structure in the region.

The name reflects the Franciscan order that has inhabited this place for centuries. Walking through the spaces, you notice how the religious community shaped the local identity over time.

The main entrance on the street side is marked by stone angels and family crests, making it easy to locate. The underground crypt is accessible through the main entrance but involves descending steep historical stairs.

The underground crypt holds over 100 coffins from the Batthyány family, including the elaborate lead sarcophagus of Prince Karl Joseph. This dense concentration of aristocratic burials reveals how important this noble family was to the surrounding region.
