Kirkconnell Correctional Centre, Minimum security prison near Bathurst, Australia
Kirkconnell Correctional Centre is a low-security prison in the hilly region between Lithgow and Bathurst in New South Wales. The site consists of several buildings set among trees and bush land, and it holds male inmates only.
The site opened in 1958 as a forestry camp focused on tree planting and was later closed in 2011. It reopened in 2015 as a correctional centre after the buildings were renovated for that purpose.
Kirkconnell is known for running work programs that take place outside the walls, including in the surrounding state forest. This kind of open-style sentence is less common in New South Wales and shapes the daily rhythm of the place.
Visits must be arranged in advance through the JUST Connect system and take place on weekends only. It is worth checking current entry requirements and what identification or documentation you need to bring.
The centre runs a dedicated bushfire-fighting team made up of both staff and inmates, who respond to fires in Sunny Corner State Forest. This gives prisoners a real outdoor responsibility that goes well beyond typical prison work.
