Queensport Aquarium, Historical aquarium and entertainment complex in Hemmant, Australia
The Queensport Aquarium occupied 11 acres of landscaped grounds with a two-story building featuring six large fish tanks displaying marine creatures. The site also included a concert hall and entertainment areas spread across the grounds.
The venue opened in August 1889 as Queensland's first amusement park with various attractions and facilities. Operations ceased in 1901 when structures were sold and the land was subdivided for other purposes.
The concert hall with 1,400 seats became a gathering place where Brisbane residents attended organ performances, theatre shows, and band concerts on weekend afternoons. It served as a cultural center for the local community to enjoy music and entertainment.
The site was most easily reached by steamers departing from Brisbane city centre, making it convenient for day visitors from the city. The boat journey was an integral part of the overall visit experience.
The grounds featured exotic animals including tigers, a black Java panther, cheetahs, and bears housed in specialized enclosures. A major flood in 1893 significantly damaged these facilities.
