Southern Tablelands Temperate Grassland, Protected grassland ecosystem in New South Wales, Australia
Southern Tablelands Temperate Grassland is a native grassland ecosystem found on plateaus between 560 and 1,200 meters (1,850 and 3,900 feet) in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. It features moderately tall tussock grasses mixed with herbaceous plants across open plains.
Before European settlement, this grassland ecosystem covered about 450,000 hectares (1.1 million acres) across New South Wales and supported diverse native plants and animals. European arrival and agricultural expansion dramatically reduced its extent.
Local Indigenous peoples developed deep knowledge of these grasslands through generations of living with the land and using its resources sustainably. Their relationship with this ecosystem remains part of the place's identity today.
Several protected reserves safeguard portions of this grassland across the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales for preservation and public access. Visiting these reserves allows you to observe the open landscape and native grasses up close.
Cold air inversions create frequent frost conditions here that naturally prevent trees from growing and keep the landscape grassland-dominated. These weather patterns are key to maintaining the open environment visitors see today.
