The site was discovered in 1896 and began operations in 1901, becoming the largest gold producer in New South Wales at its peak. Operations ceased in the early 1920s, marking the end of an important mining period in the region.
The mine influenced the development of Canbelego village, which grew to 1,500 residents including 300 mine workers during peak operations in 1905.
Access is via the road to Canbelego in a semi-arid region with limited shade available. Visitors should bring adequate water and be prepared for the exposed location.
By its closure in 1923, Mount Boppy Gold Mine had extracted 13.5 tons of gold and generated substantial returns for company shareholders.
