Cobar Post Office

Cobar Post Office is a postal building on Linsley Street with red brick walls, Italianate arched windows, and decorative moldings across its front. The structure features timber arch brackets and stone window sills that define its distinctive appearance.

James Barnet designed the building in 1885 to serve the copper mining area and establish mail connections between Bourke and Cobar Mine. Extensions added in the early 1900s by architect Walter Vernon altered its original appearance.

The building shows how mail services connected remote mining communities to the wider world during a period of rapid growth. Its red brick design and arched entrance reflect the care taken to create impressive public buildings even in isolated places.

The building continues to function as a working post office today, so it can be viewed from the outside while it serves its daily purpose. The heritage features are accessible to see while respecting that it remains an active public service.

The front facade hides a taller gable-roofed structure behind it that was intentionally concealed during early 1900s extensions. This clever design choice shows how architects used visual tricks to make the building feel balanced within the street.
