Les Tournels, Terraced campsite in Ramatuelle, France
Les Tournels is a hillside campsite set among pine trees in Ramatuelle, in the Var department of southern France, a short drive from Saint-Tropez. The grounds are laid out on terraced levels, offering pitches for tents and motorhomes as well as rental accommodations such as mobile homes and chalets.
The campsite opened in the second half of the 20th century, at a time when Saint-Tropez and the surrounding coast were drawing growing numbers of summer visitors from across Europe. Over the following decades the facilities were gradually expanded to meet the rising expectations of seasonal guests.
Les Tournels sits close to Ramatuelle, a hilltop village known for its narrow streets and summer theater festival. Evenings on the site often take on a relaxed southern French feel, with outdoor dining and the scent of pine in the air.
The terrain slopes noticeably across the site, so wearing comfortable shoes and picking up a map at reception makes getting around much easier. Most shared facilities such as pools, the restaurant, and the reception area are grouped toward the center of the property.
The site has its own small vineyard, and during the summer guests can taste the wines produced there at the on-site restaurant. This is something rarely found at a campsite anywhere along this stretch of coast.
