El Rinconcillo
El Rinconcillo is a Spanish restaurant and tapas bar in the Casco Antiguo neighborhood of Seville, on Calle Gerona. Inside, the space has heavy wooden furniture, tiled walls, shelves filled with old jars, and photographs covering nearly every surface.
El Rinconcillo was founded in 1670, making it the oldest bar and restaurant in Seville. It has remained on the same street ever since, passing through different owners while keeping its role as a neighborhood gathering spot.
At El Rinconcillo, it is common to eat standing at the bar, sharing small plates of cured ham, fried fish, or croquettes. Waiters still chalk up orders on the wooden counter and add up the bill by hand right in front of you.
The restaurant sits in the middle of a network of narrow streets in Casco Antiguo, so arriving on foot is the easiest option. It tends to be calmer at midday or early evening, while weekends and late evenings can bring longer waits for a table.
Despite being open for over 350 years, the bar survived a major fire that destroyed much of the surrounding neighborhood in 1729. The building still stands on its original site, making it one of the few structures in the area that has not moved.
