Domaine de Trianon
Domaine de Trianon is a sprawling park area in Versailles with two separate palaces and extensive gardens. The grounds feature the marble Grand Trianon and the smaller Petit Trianon, along with woodlands, artificial lakes, and landscaped pathways throughout the property.
Trianon was built in the 17th century as a private retreat for King Louis XIV and served as a counterpoint to the formal main palace. It evolved over time into a royal pleasure ground with multiple architectural phases.
The site is relatively far from the main palace, so comfortable shoes are advisable since you will walk between the various buildings and gardens. There are several entrances and pathways through the wooded areas that offer easy routes to explore.
The Petit Trianon was designed later as a neoclassical reaction against the baroque opulence of the Grand Trianon, displaying a completely different architectural taste. This contrast between the two buildings is often overlooked in most summaries.
