Grote Markt, Historic city square in Antwerp, Belgium
Grote Markt is a triangular plaza in Antwerp lined with Renaissance guild houses displaying ornate carved facades, anchored by the Town Hall at its head. The entire space functions as a pedestrian zone with stone paving, lined with dining establishments and outdoor seating areas.
The square received official status in 1310 when a Duke of Brabant granted the land to the city as communal ground. Over centuries it developed into the commercial and social heart of Antwerp.
The Brabo Fountain displays a Roman soldier throwing a severed hand, referencing the founding legend of Antwerp that locals have passed down through generations. The sculpture sits at the center of the plaza, catching the eye of people crossing through the space.
The plaza sits in the city center and offers easy access to Belgian restaurants and sidewalk cafes surrounding the space on all sides. As a pedestrian zone with stone paving, it can be slippery when wet, so wear appropriate footwear.
The square serves as the starting point for one of Europe's oldest cycling races held each spring. It also hosts a beer festival celebrating brewing traditions, bringing different crowds to the space throughout the year.
