Old Exchange, Historical exchange building in central Antwerp, Belgium
The Old Exchange is a building with neo-Gothic architecture featuring a central courtyard surrounded by galleries with detailed stone work and ornate windows. Its interior structure shows crafted details and openings designed to serve the needs of traders and merchants.
The original exchange building was destroyed by fire in 1858 and later rebuilt by architect Joseph Schadde. The new construction was completed in 1872 using fireproof materials.
The building reflects Antwerp's role as a major trading center where merchants gathered for business. Its design and layout show the wealth and power that commerce brought to the city.
The building now serves as a public space hosting events, meetings, and conferences, while the adjacent Schippersbeurs functions as a restaurant. Visitors should check what activities are scheduled when planning a visit to see different parts of the space.
The entrance tower on Borzestraat is the only surviving element from the original exchange building and was restored in the 19th century. This tower still displays features from the period before the fire.
