Salto do Cabrito, Waterfall in Ribeira Grande, São Miguel Island, Portugal

Salto do Cabrito is a waterfall on São Miguel Island that drops in two stages roughly 30 meters down, forming a natural pool at its base surrounded by thick green vegetation. The setting is secluded and the site offers space for swimming and exploring within a quiet corner of the island.

The site became part of a hydroelectric complex built in the early 1900s to provide power to the island. A metal walkway was added later to allow maintenance work on the system.

The waterfall serves as a gathering place for people from the area who come here to swim and spend time together, especially during warmer months. This role shows how natural sites remain important to the daily life and social connections of those living nearby.

The waterfall is reached via a marked trail starting from Caldeiras, where parking is available near Termas das Caldeiras thermal springs. The walk is short and easy to follow, with plenty of chances to rest and swim at the destination.

The site brings together remnants of an old power system with active nature, where visitors can try canyoning alongside pipes and metal structures built over a century ago. This blend of industrial history and water sports makes the location memorable in unexpected ways.
