Our Lady of Peace Chapel

Our Lady of Peace Chapel is a place of worship in Vila Franca do Campo on the island of São Miguel, positioned at the edge of Lagoa das Furnas and featuring 13 large arcade windows created by French artists. The building uses locally sourced materials such as basalt and tuff, worked by local stonemasons.

José do Canto commissioned this place of worship in 1864 through architect André Breton as a memorial to his deceased wife. The project emerged during a time of architectural renewal that reflected the artistic influences connecting the Azores and Europe.

The chapel displays French craftsmanship through its large arcade windows that flood the interior with light and shape the space. Visitors immediately notice how these windows dominate the architecture and define the building from both inside and out.

A visit requires climbing steps, as the building is not wheelchair accessible and sits on elevated ground. It is wise to wear sturdy footwear and check opening hours in advance.

The interior impresses with tall ceilings and detailed columns that make a strong impression without falling into ornamental excess. The main altar blends neo-Romanesque and Gothic design elements in a harmonious way that feels like a deliberate artistic choice rather than eclecticism.
