Furnas Golf Club is an 18-hole golf course built on volcanic terrain at Achada das Furnas, surrounded by Japanese cedars with views of Furnas Lake. The fairways undulate across the landscape with elevated greens featuring pronounced slopes that create technical shot-making challenges.
The original 9-hole layout was designed by Mackenzie Ross in 1936 and maintained Scottish golf design traditions. It was later expanded to 18 holes through work by Cameron Powell Associates.
The course blends with the surrounding geothermal landscape through natural volcanic features like lava sand bunkers visible throughout the property. This connection reflects how the design celebrates São Miguel Island's geological character.
The course sits on hilly terrain, so comfortable walking shoes are essential for getting around safely and comfortably. Weather can change quickly in this region, so bringing layers and a rain jacket helps protect against unexpected showers.
