Museu da Carris, Transportation museum in Alcântara, Portugal
The Museu da Carris is a transportation museum in Alcântara, housed in a former station building on the Tagus riverbank. Its collections display restored trams, buses, and funiculars from different periods of Lisbon's transport history.
Founded in 1999 within Santo Amaro Station, this museum preserves vehicles and artifacts from Lisbon's public transport system beginning in 1872. The collection documents the evolution of the city's public transportation over more than a century.
The multimedia room features films with former Carris employees sharing their work experiences across different decades of Lisbon's transport history. These personal stories create a connection between visitors and the daily lives of generations of workers.
The museum is located beneath the 25 de Abril Bridge with convenient tram and bus access nearby. Visitors can easily arrive by public transportation and explore the grounds on foot.
Visitors can ride in an original 1901 tram that operates between the two main exhibition areas. This working vehicle uniquely connects the different sections of the collection.
