Alcântara

Alcântara is a district on the western side of Lisbon that stretches between Ajuda and Belém. The area sits on sloped terrain and is shaped by its location near the Tagus River, which forms its southern boundary.

Archaeological evidence shows that people lived here during prehistoric times, and the area was known as Horta Navia during the Roman period. These early settlements form the roots of what this place eventually became.

The district keeps its sense of community through gathering places like Biblioteca de Alcântara and Mercado Rosa Agulhas, where residents meet regularly. These spaces shape how people interact and spend their daily lives in the neighborhood.

The area is easy to explore on foot, with pathways winding through different elevations. It helps to use local maps or navigation when moving through the steeper streets to stay oriented.

During the 1800s, the area transformed from a noble estate into an important industrial center with factories and warehouses built along the river. This industrial past still shapes the architecture and character of the streets today.
