Viaduto Duarte Pacheco, Concrete arch road bridge in Lisbon, Portugal.
The Duarte Pacheco Viaduct is a concrete arch bridge in Lisbon that crosses the Alcantara valley. It connects the Serra de Monsanto district to Campolide and carries multiple lanes of traffic across its main spans.
Engineer Joao Alberto Barbosa Carmona designed this bridge in 1937, and construction took place between 1939 and 1944. It was built to improve transportation connections in Lisbon during a period of urban expansion.
The viaduct represents Portuguese engineering capabilities of the mid-20th century, demonstrating the nation's commitment to modernizing transportation infrastructure.
The viaduct carries vehicle traffic between the A5 motorway and central Lisbon, with the Marques tunnel providing an underground connection below it. Pedestrians can view the structure from ground level or nearby roads.
The structure uses three parallel arches with spans of about 40 meters, with pillars embedded directly into the arch framework. This design was an innovative solution for bridging wide valleys at the time of construction.
