Sölden, Ski resort in Ötztal Alps, Austria.
Sölden is a ski resort in the Ötztal Alps spanning three linked sectors across elevations from 1,350 to 3,340 meters (4,430 to 10,960 feet). The area contains over 140 kilometers (87 miles) of ski runs with different difficulty levels accessible by modern lift systems.
The region began as a mountain farming village before its transformation into a winter sports destination started in the 1940s with the first ski lifts. These early installations marked the beginning of what would become a major Alpine resort.
Mountain lodges throughout the resort serve as gathering places where skiers meet for food and local drinks. These huts are part of how people spend their time here, blending rest stops with social moments.
The resort operates from October through May with efficient lift systems connecting all three sectors. Visitors should prepare for cold temperatures and variable weather conditions, especially at higher elevations.
Three peaks above 3,000 meters (9,840 feet) called BIG 3 are connected within the resort and offer glacier skiing opportunities for much of the year. This high altitude distinction makes extended skiing possible beyond the typical winter season.
