Innere Schwarze Schneid, Mountain summit in Ötztal Alps, Austria
Innere Schwarze Schneid is a mountain in the Ötztal Alps featuring a large panorama terrace on its eastern slope. This elevated platform provides expansive views toward neighboring Alpine peaks and distant ranges.
The mountain was first climbed in 1874 by Theodor Petersen, Moriz von Déchy, and Victor Hecht along with local guides. This early ascent established the peak as a notable climbing destination in the Alps.
The name refers to the distinctive knife-like shape of the peak, which becomes especially visible when approaching from certain viewpoints across the valley.
Access is easiest via the Tiefenbachferner cable car, which brings you to Tiefenbachjoch as a starting point. From there, a short hiking route with fixed safety ropes guides you to the summit on rocky terrain.
Two glaciers flow down the mountain's slopes: the Rettenbach and Tiefenbach glaciers, shaping the landscape at this altitude. These frozen bodies endure throughout the year and contribute to the dramatic terrain climbers encounter.
