Atuh Beach, Sand beach in Nusa Penida, Indonesia
Atuh Beach is a sand beach in Nusa Penida with a crescent shape tucked between towering limestone cliffs and framed by clear turquoise waters. The wide sandy shore extends from cliff base to cliff base, sloping gently into shallow water at the shore.
This place remained difficult to reach until 2016, when local residents built concrete stairs down the cliffside to connect the clifftop to the beach below. That single construction project opened the area to visitors for the first time.
Local fishermen continue to use these waters for their traditional catch, launching wooden boats at specific times that match the water conditions. You can see their boats resting on the sand and watch as they return with their daily haul.
Check tide levels before your visit, since low tide reveals coral reefs and makes swimming difficult or risky in some areas. Plan to arrive when the water is higher for safer and more comfortable swimming conditions.
A natural rock arch rises from the water offshore, creating a distinct shape that changes depending on where you stand on the beach. This formation is one of the most photographed features here and makes the coastline instantly recognizable.
