Klungkung

Klungkung is an administrative regency in Bali, Indonesia, spanning roughly 315 square kilometers and encompassing the main island as well as several smaller islands including Nusa Penida, Nusa Ceningan, and Nusa Lembongan. The administrative center of Semarapura connects these territories through main highways and serves as the hub of government operations.

The regency served as a center of Balinese power during the Gelgel dynasty around 1400 and reached its peak under King Waturenggong around 1550. The seat of power later shifted to Klungkung itself in 1710.

The Kertha Gosa Pavilion displays intricate ceiling paintings showing ancient Hindu stories and depictions of how justice was administered in earlier times. Visitors can see these detailed artworks and understand what courtroom proceedings looked like in the past.

Semarapura is easily reachable from other Balinese regions via main highways and offers several traditional markets to explore. The town also contains government buildings and museums like the Semarajaya that are open to visitors.

Kamasan village preserves the tradition of classical Balinese wayang painting through meticulously crafted works depicting stories from ancient Hindu epics. Artisans there have used the same hand-painting techniques for generations.
