Klungkung extends across 315 square kilometers of land, incorporating the main Bali island territory and several offshore islands including Nusa Penida, Nusa Ceningan, and Nusa Lembongan.
The region functioned as the center of Balinese power during the Gelgel dynasty around 1400, reaching its peak under King Waturenggong by 1550 before relocating to Klungkung in 1710.
