Diamond beach, Coastal beach on Nusa Penida, Indonesia
Diamond Beach is a sandy cove on Nusa Penida surrounded by tall limestone cliffs and turquoise waters. The bay is defined by striking rock formations that rise from the shoreline.
The beach remained largely inaccessible to visitors until 2018 and stayed in its natural state. Access changed after stairs were carved into the limestone to allow visitors to reach the shore.
Local inhabitants of Nusa Penida maintain traditional fishing practices along the coastline, preserving methods passed through generations.
Access is through a long staircase carved into the cliff, requiring about 20 minutes to descend. The terrain is steep, so wear sturdy footwear and be careful when steps are wet.
The name comes from the distinctive diamond shape the cove forms when viewed from above, with white sand creating a strong contrast against dark rocks. This geometric feature is hard to spot from sea level but becomes clear in aerial photographs.
