Shelly Beach

Shelly Beach is a west-facing coastal area in the Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve with white sand and clear water for swimming and snorkeling. The protected waters extend to depths of around 12 meters, offering visitors opportunities to observe various fish species in the shallow underwater environment.

Aboriginal peoples left evidence of their presence through a shell midden near Fairy Bower car park, which influenced the naming of the beach. These archaeological remains show the long history of this coastal area's use by the original inhabitants.

The beach gained prominence through the opening scenes of the 1983 film BMX Bandits, linking the place to Australian cinema and local outdoor culture. This film connection has made it a destination for visitors interested in exploring these cinematic locations.

The beach offers free electric barbecues, showers, toilets, and The Boathouse cafe with parking available nearby at an hourly rate. Arriving early is wise on weekends to secure a parking spot, particularly on sunny days when snorkeling conditions are best.
